Last Saturday I took my '71 Sonett III out to a local car show for the first time since installing the transmission saver kit (part #4040) and reverse lock-out kit (part #4540) from Mark Ashcraft.
Wow. I can highly recommend these parts! In the past I had learned to be careful with the shifter but since in its standard state it is fairly sloppy, it was always a trick to be sure you found 2nd gear. With the transmission saver kit, the spring you install sort of pulls the stick, when in neutral position a little to the right so you are closer to the 3rd/4th gear slots. When you do put it in 1st or 2nd, you have to pull against the spring a bit and it makes it much more obvious to find those gear positions. And then when you do go for reverse, you know it.
The reverse lock-out kit just adds that extra protection once you have backed out of some place.
The only question I had for those who have installed the reverse lock-out kit is that when the lever is pulled back toward the rear of the car, it cannot go all the way back if the passenger seat is pulled forward because it runs into the seat. I had to position the passenger seat most of the way back so the lever could clear. This is not a huge problem, but wondered if others have noticed this too.
