... roll it back and forth. This applies about as much torque as you are going to be able to get on the crankshaft. If you use the bolt holding the pulley on the front of the engine you will be stressing the timing gears as that bolt is on the balance shaft and not the crank.
You may still need to rebuild the engine even if you do succeed in getting the piston rings free. I had a 99 engine that I bought from a junk yard with the idea of rebuilding it for my car. The hood was off the car and water had gotten into the engine and one piston was frozen solidly in the cylinder. With the engine completely disassembled except for removal of that piston, the best penetrating oil I have ever found in thirty years of mechanicing couldn't soak through and release that piston. The machine shop ended up breaking the piston to get it our. The rust was so bad that the cylinder wall was pitted and putting new rings on the pistons, though okay for the other three, would not have been enough to get a good seal on that cylinder. I had to bore the engine out.
