Just guessing here because I've never played with a Sonett...
It looks like the (+) contact (you call it the pressure plate) might be press-fit into the reflector. (I'm not sure how that contact is insulated from the reflector housing itself.) Maybe you can remove it and that'll make it easier to bend into a better shape so it's held tight & makes better contact with the bulb.
