Car won't keep running Posted by Trogdor42 [Email] (#2494) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Trogdor42) on Fri, 19 Jul 2019 06:50:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well the good news is I got the clutch problem fixed. Replacing the clutch cover did the trick and now the pedal is nice and high and releases exactly as it should. Also the water pump is tight and not leaking a drop. BUT...
When I put the engine back in everything went to plan. It all fit together perfectly and I got all the lines, the starter, the carb and linkage reinstalled no problem. But when I started the car I noticed two things. First, it won't stay running more that a couple seconds. While it is running there's a high-pitched whine. If I give it enough gas it will stay running, but if the revs go below 2,000 it stalls. All signs seem to point toward a massive vacuum leak, but I can't for the life of me think where one might be. Since I took out the intermediate plate and went with the Weber carb, the only vacuum left is the advance and the PCV valve. Is there something else I might be missing?
I connected the engine pull chains to the two bolts on the intake next to the carb, one on either side. Is it possible I screwed something up there? I made sure the bolts were back in tight when I took the chains back off. I even put some sealer around the PCV (which is now tapped directly into the intake), but no luck.
If this sounds like something else entirely, please let me know. Otherwise it's back to troubleshooting. Thanks all!
