"What about the interior rear bulkhead? Originally plywood covered with faux pleated vinyl upholstery? Or carpet? Or something else?"
NO plywood.
on the front side (towards the cabin) there is the swiss cheese metal plate. It is a steel sheet that covers the gas tank and has large holes in it (4 - 6 -inch diameter holes in it, resembling swiss cheese). It is installed at an angle and is covered directly by the orange-color "pressed-vinyl" that is used throughout the interior of the car (doors, trunk, etc). The same color was used in all Sonett IIIs. The vinyl is glued to the steel sheet. On the top of the gas tank is the roll bar. It is not attached to the gas tank but to a bar that runs across the car. On the back side of the gas tank is a thin sheet of a cardboard material that is typical of what is used behind the vinyl or other interior wall coverings from the early 1970s period.
you have not described anything unusual or anything to be nervous about.
Good luck.
