The center console (where the floor shifter is) is just a plastic housing that covers part of the shift linkage and has a little coin tray indented area in front of the shifter (a little bit larger than the size of a deck of cards). The rubber boot at the bottom of the shifter column has a metal clip in the bottom that connects the boot to the plastic housing. I don't remember any wiring under that center console housing.
The rear "bulkhead" as you called it is a metal enclosure that covers the fuel tank, which is vertically oriented. The pleated vinyl upholstery is just to cover that metal enclosure and improve the looks of that separation between the cabin seat area and the hatch area.
