Re: Preferred Fuel Line to Carb? Posted by eric in vermont [Email] In Reply to: Re: Preferred Fuel Line to Carb?, BradW |
I agree with ErikS- use flexible fuel line from the pump up to the carb. There should be a little clip attached to one of the front cover bolts to hold it in place. I can take a pic if you like.
Also, Saab guru Jack Lawrence lined me out one day, in his very nice way of course, to get rid of the plastic see-thru fuel filter under the hood and replace it with a metal one. "Plastic fuel filters have NO PLACE under the hood" he exhorted me. "They can melt, catch fire, etc." Good advice!
All that said, I tend to also go with an electric pump for my V4's. I mount it under the rear seat in 96's or behind the seat in Sonetts. I put a filter between it and the tank (a plastic one so I can see how much crud it's catching) and then a second metal filter before the carb. Overkill probably.
I know VSaabs have run millions of miles with the mechanical pumps and I have nothing against them. I like the electric version because my fleet of 4 sit a bit and the electric pumps reduce the cranking when the bowl evaporates. Turn on the key, wait 30 seconds for the pump to fill the bowl, pump the gas, and VROOM. I use an Airtex model E8016S and have been pretty happy with them. I did finally have a failure of an electric pump in my '64 two stroke just last week. It refused to start and with the key on, I didn't hear that familiar whine from under the seat. It wasn't an Airtex, but some other no-name brand. It lasted 5 or 6 years at least.
