Another suggestion to inspect the rear ground. That'd be my first choice as it's more likely, particularly because your post mentions "....rear lights...."(plural) and "They..." implying not just the directional on that side. The rear ground is also easier to access than the switch lever.
The directional's thermo-mechanical flasher works on current, and the heat from that current makes the bi-metallic contact open and close the pathway to the bulbs. If there is an additional resistance (in addition to the incandescent bulbs), there's less current flow, less heat, and less growth and shrink of the bi-metallic strip, so the flasher contact doesn't open and close quite right. A poor ground would be such an additional resistance.
