Re: 68 Sonett Water Pump Replacement - 2 x 4 under the oil pan Posted by juanm [Email] In Reply to: Re: 68 Sonett Water Pump Replacement, Name Left Blank, Tue, 8 May 2018 21:27:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I did two of these recently and after struggling to get the infamous lower inside bolt, I decided to try what Eric in Vermont suggested (which I heard from others in other forums that they successfully did this).
I put the 2x 4 on top of the jack and raised the jack so it came into contact with the oil pan but I wasn't and didn't try to jack the car up. The 2x4 on top of the jack was just in contact with oil pan. I made certain it was stable.
I then removed the engine bracket behind the water pump. That was easy. I then removed the motor mount. That was easy.
I then had a clear pathway for a long extension wobbly socket wrench to access that lower bolt. Dependent on your car condition you might want to spray that bolt with some penetrant, like PB Blaster, from both sides (the botts actually have an opening on the front. Use that extension straw/nozzle on both sides. let it sit for a bit.
Now try removing it. One of mine was very easy to do (I guess it had been removed before I owned it), the other was a little more stubborn but doable.
After installing the new pump and putting all the bolts back in place, i reassembled the motor mount and the engine bracket. Then I lowered the jack. NO damage to the oil pan.
Be gentle. Be careful.
