It's tricky. I usually only insert the nozzle about 25% and try to angle to shoot down the hole beyond the first curve, but if the fill is too fast, it still trips off. Most of the time I get very little if any back splash or splatter.
But one time, after I had stopped filling, it was like there was a air bubble trapped in the tank and as it rose up the neck it was pushing about a .5 quart of fuel. I could watch it happening, but couldn't do anything about it. So quickly put the cap on it before any spilled out.
I have thought about having a hose to put on the nozzle to get it further down the neck while filling. Might work, but it would cause a different mess dealing with removing the hose and how do you store it?
