That's what I've done. The jack plate should make contact and be welding such that it contacts the bottom of the rocker as well as up the outside edge, almost like angle iron. If done right, it's plenty strong.

And of course what matters most is decent thickness rocker panels. They provide structural integrity for the whole car. I've seen them completely rusted out and patched with things like aluminum flashing riveted along the length. I know you wouldn't do such a thing!
