Depends on what is on now. You still did not say whether it was a double pipe running backwards or a single one where both cylinder banks come together. When I changed exhaust I went from one extreme (something homebuilt; single 1,75' pipe, a-symetric front part, small muffler at the rear) to the other (shortened Highgate-exhaust; 2x2' pipes, free-flow mufflers). I gained at least 700 rpm (stock engine, so I don't exceed 5500 revs) and response got much better. The sound became dark, but not louder on the outside (it did on the inside but maybe that was becaus there were now two mufflers under the floor and besides the trunk and before there was only one in the back). I read on a very good Dutch site (if you're interested, try http://www.uitlaten.com) that the lesser backpressure an exhaust produces the better it is. I.m.h.o. a Sonett should have a double exhaust; looks much better.
Hope this helps a bit.
