Due to the difficulty working with it, I would probably not go thicker than 18 gauge if I was doing it again. It was a pain to weld the new to the old because of the difference in thickness, in addition to the problem that my sheet metal shear and brake are only supposed to have up to 18 gauge in them.
Although I did dent one of my new rockers when I put it up on the lift...so, maybe not...or maybe I need to put the jack lift points back on to better distribute the load next time.
The sheet of metal that I bought and used on this weighed somewhere in the neighborhood of 60-75 lbs. So I've only added 35lbs to the car (nothing a good diet can't overcome)...and its all on the bottom of the car so its lowered the center of gravity :)
