The bushings are between the rod that the light buckets attach to and the fiberglass body of the car. The nose piece as tabs that drop down at the back of the light openings and the rod that is connected to the light buckets goes through there. The rod has an arm attached to it near the driver's side front of the car. Then you have the spring-loaded mechanism that the pull arm attaches to. All those joints should be lubricated and if you have the bushing in there, then you shouldn't have any trouble pulling the lights up. My can has mildly worn bushings and pulling the lights up is quite easy, actually. When I first got the car years ago, it was almost a two-handed job. The big hang up for me was actually where the rod goes through the firewall. But considering where your set up broke, I'd go with the pods getting hung up and a lack of lubrication/friction reduction up front.
