You can use a Saturn straight 4 or a C900, or an RX7. V8 is too big IMHO, although I am sure some person somewhere has shoe horned it. There is a famous video of a German who converted a SonettIII to a rear engine RWD with a Saab Classic 900 turbo engine. There is another guy who used a C900 front mounted with an oil pan from a triumph and a GM TH40 tranny mated to a rear axle.
If he wants to do this, he should NOT use the Saab V6, as it is prone to serious engine problems due to poor design of the timing belts.
He can also spend the money better and get more horse power from working with Jack Lawrence and Jack Ashcroft on the engine he has now. A forged crank, new pistons, a milled down set of duel output heads, and a 2 or 4 bbl manifold will give him all power he needs.
