My '69 95 wagon has a sway bar and I am surprised by the information that your Sonett does not--but not as surprised as to look and see that my '72 96 does not have one nor ever did, fastener marks are lacking. I never looked before.

Does anybody know, were some fitted with sway bars and others not? Was it an option?

Sonetts, in particular V4s, would seem to be even more front-heavy than 95/96s, therefore more in need of a sway bar. The bar counteracts body roll and (on the front) reduces understeer which is a consequence of weight balance toward the front. Rear sway bars act oppositely for reasons I am not equipped to explain.

My service information (Haynes etc, I would love a factory manual but don't have one) indicates that the sway bar can be removed or installed from the R with engine in. At worst one might need to judiciously jack up the engine a tad after loosening the motor mounts and with a block of wood over the jack under the oil pan, to gain added clearance.

If you want to add a sway bar you will need the bar itself, the brackets to hold it to the body, the brackets to hold it to the lower A-arm, and appropriate bushings. All these are available, the sway bar itself and the end brackets that attach to the lower A-arm are probably SAAB-specific and you will have to go used. The rest can be cobbled from readily available aftermarket parts.

Overall, if I had a Sonett I would add a sway bar unless somebody told me why to not do so. I wonder why it was not there from the factory.

For better information on sway bars than I can offer, check wikipedia where there is a decent discussion and links to other sites, at least one of which seemed clearer to me than the wiki article itself.
