89 900S loss of reverse and 5th [saabnet.com]

My 89 900S lost the ability to shift into both reverse and
5th gear today. I was edging into a tight parking space
when she refused to go back into reverse. I suspect
that I have a problem with the linkage. I disassembled
the shift lever and discovered that the center pin has a
definite bend to it. Is that correct? As far as I can tell
from pictures in the Bentley manual the center pin should
be straight. That might be the source of my difficulties.
Can anyone set me straight?
