The warning lamp in the instrument cluster for the charging system (idiot
light for the battery) is necessary for the charging system to work. If it's
burned out, you won't get a charge to the battery. And, it's different from
the other instrument lamps (2 watt as opposed to 1.2 watt for all the
others). If the parts guys at your local dealership aren't aware of this,
they'll sell you a 1.2 watt bulb with a black base and you won't charge
properly at idle, according to the Bentley manual.

Your problem is probably something bigger or more of a nuisance, but be sure
the light comes on when you turn the key to the ON position, then be sure it
goes out when the car starts. And if you have to change the voltage
regulator, it is possible to do it without removing the alternator (with a
lot of patience, a variety of screwdrivers, and probably removal of your oil
filter). Not fun, but possible...

A friend told me a few years ago that the Cibie headlamps were better than
the Hella units, but I'm trying to find a source and getting nowhere. Has
anyone had experience with rectangular, dual beam lamps from Cibie or Hella,
with comments as to whether either is preferrable? I want something better
than the sealed beams on my 86 900T. Is anyone in the US selling Cibie
rectangular lamps? I know where to get the Hella's... Perspiring minds want
to know.
