This sounds just exactly like the problems I had on my 88 900 when I needed a 
new alternator, we had the battery replaced twice when the sears people found 
'nothing wrong' with the alternator, but eventually (and since it was all 
warranted they got tired of replacing batteries) they agreed and put in a new 
alternator and all was well
