Shall I keep my classic 900??
Posted by Simon Creek (more from Simon Creek) on Thu, 26 Oct 2000 19:12:52
Hello Saab Enthusos...

I would appreciate it if you could provide me with your opinions - and
please be as objective as possible!

I have a 1990 900 EMS 5spd (I think is the US this is the non turbo 'S'?).
It has done 160,000 kms and I have spent approximately $4000 on it over 2
years. I bought it at 100,000kms in 1998. The engine has never missed a
beat, and so far, I don't think the gearbox has a problem. However, there is
a bit of diff noise.

I have replaced/rejuventated: shocks (bilstein), clutch, discs, roof liner,
CD player, new tyres, one wheel bearing, alternator bushes, alternator, most
seals, exhaust, stacks of little things like belts, leads, etc..., air con,
CV boots...

The exterior is dark blue and apart from a small dent and scrath or two, it
is in good condition. Bumpers are not too faded and the only spot of surface
rust is around the manual sunroof edge. I replaced all emblems and tidied
up. The interior is good, but dash is very cracked and the door linings are
faded. Front carpet also needs replacing.

At present I have an offer of AU$11,000.00 on it and I am tempted to sell.
However, I love the car and will need a second car in about 9 months even if
not now.

Everything works, but I am concerned about the following in the future: cold
start problems, the legendary gearbox/diff problems, timing chain (may be a
rattle there, may just be tappets), power steering rack... as well as the
fact that I have moved and am now 400kms from a Saab tech.

Do you think I should sell while the car is running so well? Is there a
reason to? What do you think the above concerns may cost me in the future?
Have I missed any likely expenses?

Your answers will be very helpful. Thankyou in advance for your replies.

Cheers
