1982 Saab Radio
Posted by Herb Hickman (more from Herb Hickman) on Sun, 25 Nov 2001 11:23:20
This is my first experience with the Saabnow list.

My daughter had a 1982 900 Turbo Three-door in only fair condition with an
intermittent engine stalling and refusal-to-restart (for a while) problem.
I took to driving the Saab so that I could attempt to observe the problem,
but after many weeks it only rarely showed itself and only for brief
duration. We replaced the ignition control module and had already replaced
the fuel pump. That's another problem. She bought another car and I've in
the meantime become attached to the Saab, enjoy driving it and don't want
to see it junked.

Before she got the car, somebody removed the radio; it supposedly wasn't
working. I'd like to install a radio. Fishing into the dark region
through the open radio slot in the dash, I can find the following wires:

One wire with a plastic plug, that has 11.9 volts with ignition off.
One wire that gets 12+ volts when the ignition is switched on. This one
has a double plug, with nothing connected to half of it.
One wire with sort of a bullet plug on the end, no voltage on it with or
without ignition, and a repeatable resistance measurement of 0.3 ohm to
ground.
An ordinary looking antenna lead with metal plug on the end.
Two DIN standard plugs (female), each connected to a 2-conductor cord that
resembles household lamp or speaker (twin-rip) cord.

I'm guessing that the DIN plugs are speakers, maybe used by Saab and maybe
aftermarket. The wire with 0.3 ohm to ground I don't understand. Is it
for sending up the power antenna at the left rear of the car? I cannot
tell whether that antenna is workable at all, as there is nothing
protruding to pull on to see if the mast can be pulled out, nor do I know
how to attempt to energize it electrically. Can anyone make sense of this
arrangement of wires and advise me how to test the antenna or proceed with
getting an antenna installed?
