YESSS!!!!

the 'stretched chain' - actually a worn chain - eventually develops a link
pitch-length that no longer matches the tooth pitch on the sprocket. Then,
the tooth clashes with the roller, instead of smoothly picking it up, the
impact causing tooth wear and very rapid wear on the link in question. The
chain design is such that every roller hits every tooth, so the system can
never compensate for the now rapidly wearing link(s), and the chain goes
quickly to destruction.

This explains the observation that a chain will go from 'quiet' to 'broken'
in just a few thousand miles.
