I know I am concerned about the efficiency of my 11 year old converter, especially with the new stringent requirements here in NJ.
I don't think there is anything to worry about with an old convertor. Your SAAB should do fine on any emissions test with an old convertor, if it is running properly. If you would ever have emissions problems, I would look to the O2 sensor, air mass meter, and the vaccum hoses. I also have seen saabs with leaks around the air mass meter (from loose hose clamps). Basically, I'm trying to say don't waste your money on a new convertor, unless you have a really good reason. My 20 year old volvo on its original convertor and my 1988 SAAB test the same -->. Almost no hydrocarbon emissions. Well below even the strictest standards.
