2000 Saab 95 transmission fluid smell [saabnow]

Subject: 2000 Saab 95 transmission fluid smell
=================
Folks Š IÕm a new Saabnet user, albeit one that may be changing to a
different brand if I canÕt get this fixed soon.

I bought a 2000 Saab 9-5 Aero Wagon a year or so ago. It now has 55,000
miles on it. In the last 4 months it has developed a horrible cabin smell
Š unless I put the airconditioner controls to recirculate, the cabin fills
with poisonous smelling fumes at anything below 40 mph. They are bad
enough that I have to drive with the windows down to clear the smell out.
I took it in to the mechanic, who (eventually) diagnosed a leaking
transmission fluid pipe and intercooler (attached to the radiator) that was
leaking fluid onto the hot exhaust. All was well for a few weeks and the
problem just restarted, only far worse than before. The mechanic claims
that itÕs now the rear transmission gasket, and that fluid is moving
forward (as a drip) from the back of the transmission to the bottom of the
sump, then on to the exhaust. There are also numerous regular oil leaks,
although IÕm sure the smell is something else Š burning oil doesnÕt smell
as bad as this.

My questions are as follows:

- are burning transmission fluid fumes poisonous? They are
disgusting.

- Is there a particular reason pressure might be building up in
the transmission (5 speed auto) and pushing fluid out? I know Volvos have
this problem if a certain pressure outlet valve gets jammed.

- If leaks are a way of life with Saabs, is there some way to
prevent them from reaching the hot exhaust? This leak moving forward thing
sounds suspicious Š I would expect it to drip near where it forms.

- Why is the airconditioner inlet positioned such that fumes go
anywhere near it? This canÕt be a unique problem.

Anything helps. IÕm trying to get this fixed without spending another
small fortune.

Thanks, Neil
