Repair assessment
Posted by Brown, Thomas W (more from Brown, Thomas W) on Wed, 30 Jun 1999 11:19:35
About two months ago I bought a 91 900S convertible from an auction. It has expected wear and tear - a few rips in the roof top, a scratch on the hood, a rattle in the rear window assembly, delay in roof motor, for a car with over 130,000 miles.
The first day after driving it away from the auction block was to have a recommended mechanic check it out. He had a small list of things one of which was to fix a small leak in the radiator. I had all but that done immediately and planned to do the radiator this month. Last week I was driving home and noticed the thermostat was pegged out on hot. By the time I could pull over on the freeway the engine stopped. I towed it and had the same mechanic look at it. He gave me the expected, 'I told you so' look and told me the head gasket was blown.
He's given me an estimate of $500 to tear it down to the head to inspect what else may need replacing warning me that costs could easily go into the $4,000 to $6,000 range.
When I bought it I blue-booked it at about $10,000 and paid $6,000.
My question is this: Is it going to be worth it to have it repaired or would I be better off scrapping it now? I was thinking if the cost was about $2,000, I could turn around and sell it for $7,000 and only lose $1,000 on it, but if it costs $6,000 to repair I think I'm throwing my money away. How much are SAABs worth?
