That is correct. In 17 years of Saab ownership, I've never used
anything more than the rubber gasket around the thermostat.

Coolant leaks typically leave some kind of trail. Big ones leave
puddles, small ones leave green (or whatever color your coolant is)
and white dried trails. CHeck around the water pump. It's in an
out-of-the-way spot, so it's easy to miss leaks there.
