snow tire care
Posted by Tom Reingold (more from Tom Reingold) on Wed, 16 Feb 2000 14:27:55
Background:

We don't get much snow in NJ, and most seasons, it doesn't pay to get
snow tires. I don't have much experience with them.

We've had a bit of snow this year. A couple of weeks ago, we had a
heavy snowfall, and I drove in it, on the NJ Turnpike with my kids, and
they were scared. I was slipping around because the snow was wet and
fresh, and my front tires were bald.

Two days later, I overreacted and had four snow tires fitted, the
best: Nokian Hakkapelliitas (sp?). I happened to have four steel rims
lying around for these.

Questions:

1. A friend warns me not to drive over 70 mph (110 kph). Is this
true? I can easily believe it, but I'd like to know what other
people's guidelines are.

2. Also, what is a good inflation pressure? Should it be more or less
than summer tires? My summer tires are 195/60HR15 and the snow tires
are narrower at 185/65R15.

Ironically, there has been no snow since I bought the tires, so
they've been a waste so far. But I'm headed to Vermont this Friday,
so I hope for snow, for my money's sake. :-)
