The clunking might be the shock. A couple of years ago I had a VW Golf with
a defective circlip at the top of the rod in then recently installed shocks.
It would slip past the notch and make those clunking sounds when going over
bumps. Anyway, after two attempts of fixing the problem I finally got a new
circlip and it's been fine since then.
