Yep, 900EMS is correct. The move was a response to US Government regulations requiring anti-theft devices in new cars. Most manufacturers responded with a steering wheel lock interface with the ignition switch on the steering column. (Most of those were easily defeatable for a very long time, especially with something like a slide hammer which would pull mechanism right out.) Saab chose to integrate the ignition switch with the transmission and make it impossible to extract the key unless the transmission was locked in reverse gear. Before that, a Saab's ignition was on the metal dash board, sticking out just like everyone else's. The Saab safety spin was very nice for the advertizing that followed.
