I found a Craftsman slim head ratchet 3/8" ratchet, Model# 44995, $32, fits between the frame and the tensioner and then you are able to easily get the square drive into the hole in the tensioner. It takes a little muscle to then pull the tensioner back to get the belt off. I had tried a moderatley priced real tensioner removal tool, but found it useless for the 9-3 as the handle was too long and interfered with everything else in the engine bay or on the front suspension so that I coule not swing the tool. A more expensive Lisle 59000 tensioner tools with all the attachements and ratching head would likely also do the trick, but it costs 3x what the above mentioned ratchet does.
I was also able to remove the tensioner from the block with an common open end/box end combination wrench. A flat ratcheting box end wrench would be faster. I had to pry the engine to the driver side maybe a 1/4 inch, and the tensioner wiggled it's way out. I did not have to remove the crank shaft pulley.
