I honestly don't think you will get anywhere with your lawsuit. You would have to prove that there was something wrong with your vehicle specifically or something that was safety related to your vehicle. You may have bought a $35k car but that does not mean that Saab or anyone else for that matter has to supply perfection. In fact I think that if it were to go to trial Saab would argue that indeed it is the aggressive nature of their brake pads which cause the noise and also make thier brakes safer than if they used a less aggressive material.
The brake pads in you car are lined on the back with rubber which helps to stop the squeaking. They also have a cutout in this rubber that allows the pad to come in contact with the rotor at a slight angle so the downstream side of the pad comes in contact with the rotor first which keeps the pads from chattering or squealing when the car is going forward. However this also causes the upstream side of the pad to come in contact with the rotor first when backing(everything being reversed) and actually aggrivates the problem. If you eliminate the angle of the pad and let the pad come in straight you will squeak in forward or reverse.
If this is truly driving you nuts you can grind a chamfer on the trailing edge of the pad(trailing edge going forward)but you will probably have to go to an independent because I doubt any dealer would touch it.
As far as a class action suit against Saab goes I think you would be wise to remember that ever since the tobacco suit there are alot of lawyers looking for that big score. Even if the class action suit were sucessfull I would be willing to bet that the lawyer would make a bunch of money and you would end up with a certificate for $100 off on a new Saab.
As a final note all of this reminds me of a friend who was diagnosed with cancer, had major surgery and after a long recovery returned to her normal morning excercise class to find that someone had taken over her usual spot in the room. She was incensed when she related this to me and when I burst out laughing she screamed at me "What are you laughing at?" To which I replied "With everthing that you have just gone through I am just so happy that this is the biggest thorn in your life."...nuff said.
