I'll drop my two cents on this. I've driven a fair number of cars over the years, and had my fair share of interesting failures: the intermittent engine cut-out on my 73 Dodge Challenger (wiring problem), a valve stem punching through a rocker arm on the same car, the high-speed internal tire band delamination on my first BMW 2002 (under high cornering load, no less), a differential that decided to eat itself in short order on my BMW 533i, and the heater valve that exploded at speed and dumped all the coolant out of the engine in about 7 seconds on the same car, to name a few. These things happen. Cars break. Sometimes you get the common failure, sometimes you get to be the exception to the rule. Would I prefer it if the DIC was bulletproof? Sure. But it isn't. Be glad it's as easy as carrying a spare and a screwdriver if you so choose, and that you can change the part in 5 minutes. The expectation of total, flawless reliability for any machine operating over a wide range of conditions is unreasonable - sooner or later, something's gonna break. The fact that modern cars go tens of thousands of miles with virtually no maintenance or component replacement is frankly remarkable, given their complexity. Things have come an awfully long way in recent years. However, if you don't want to deal with the possibility of mechanical failure, no matter how remote, I suggest you take the bus.
