I'm a Saabist just the like the rest of you. However, I find it difficult to absolve Saab from responsibility regarding the DIC. Yes modern cars are wonderful; they can drive tens of thousands of miles without major failures. But that is, or should be, a given for all manufacturers. Since an ignition coil is obviously not a wear and tear item, given that the cassette is a source of problem for Saab owners, GM should be taken to task. How many of us would defend Ford or Chevy if the same thing were happening to our Tauruses or Impalas? Our response would be, "typical American car quality." Incidentally, the Japanese seem to have nailed down lots of ways to make cars bulletproof.
Unfortunately, the pressure to issue voluntary or mandatory recalls results largely from problems so frequent (and typically dangerous) that car owners report the problem to NHTSA in volume. But most folks don't even know they can do so. Years ago, when my Ford Probe GT's rear brakes spontaneously clamped mid-drive, I did some searching online and found that EVERY enthusiast site highlighted a rear brake issue occuring at about 60k. Seemingly every poster on various boards had the same $400 issue. But, lo and behold, no TSB from Ford.
just my 2 cents. This board is the greatest. I feel enlightened every time I research an issue here. Thanks to Dean, Swedecar et al.
