Penlope: Not saying that the moment of failure is in high heat conditions, but that cumulatively, it is the heat that eventually causes the internal parts to fail. Of my two roadside disabling DI failures, one happened on a frigid winter night when attempting to restart after a shut down of about an hour.My more recent one was in summer ,also after shutting the car down for over an hour,so at the exact point when the unit failed, I cannot say what temperature it was underhood. It is a pretty much accepted theory that heat is the actual mechanism that makes the unit fail
I am not a rabid "DI stinks" theorist, but do carry that spare simply because Ido not want to be either stranded or inconvenienced when it happens again. The newest software that is in the ECU will both extend the life of the unit as well as generate a check engine light when impending doom is near, but I am still not willing to take a chance.Since that light coming on is a sure sign that I will have to pay for a new unit anyway,my theory is,change it myself and prevent the catalytic converter from going out. That will cost a whole lot more than a spare DI in the trunk.
One last point to think about. When you drive around ,take a look at the next car you see parked on the highway and think to yourself about why that car is there. Other than an accident, it clearly was left there because it could no longer go under it's own power. I see a lot of other cars on the side of the road and actually, very fe Saabs( I am in NH where there are a ton of Saabs on the road as well)Chances are that every brand has it's own albatross around it's neck and if you were tohang around a Mercedes dealership and see how many S Class cars from the last series had to come in for total electrical failure, you would not feel that bad about the DI problem. To be sure it is a problem, but in the big picture,Saabs are still above average in reliabilty.
