I only have 2 kids, but often had to lug around 6-7 people, which, in your 5 person family would just mean adding a set of grandparents. I've had a Dodge Grand Caravan since '97, and it is a great minivan. I think they look pretty good (since '96), and with the 'quad seating' you could probably stick two kids in the second row buckets, and the third in the back bench. But I'd also look to see if you could fit all three in the back bench, and put the two buckets in the back when not needed (all sorts of configurations are possible). I only recommend a 6 cyl Grand though-- I think a 4 cyl just doesn't have enough pickup for the highway, or room -especially when carrying 7 folks. I've yet to see any SUV that could pack as much, until you get to that Expedition size -- which (IMHO)I think are just ridiculous vehicles for families.

The Caravan is great in that the front passenger can move to all areas of the van at will, without stopping to get out. This can obviously also be done in a 'regular' van, but gas mileage and the fact that they're cumbersome to drive made the minivan the choice for me. I'll be moving to a 2002 Grand Caravan Sport soon. There is even an AWD version, should that be a consideration to keep you from an SUV.

And if you are worried about the snickers because of the minivan image, well, then what the heck are you in a Saab for then, anyway? :)

I have 2 2001 9-5's and fortunately don't need the car seats anymore, but even when I did I had a 7 series BMW that might have fit 3 car seats, but I can't see any 5 series having a chance at this.

If affordable/practical, a two car scenario -- minivan for all of you, Saab for only some of you (mom and dad out on the town or mom/dad's commuting vehicle) is a wonderful combo.
