DIC failure questions

I joined the DIC failure club last summer; the engine died while I was going 80 and I was stranded on a lonely stretch of I-84 freeway near the Idaho/Utah border. I don't carry a cell phone and had to flag down someone to help me; fortunately he was kind and helpful. AAA towed my car 130 miles to the nearest Saab dealer in Salt Lake City. They treated me very well and replaced it on warranty. Later both the catalytic converter and the turbo needed replacement as well, but all is now back to normal and I still love my car (2000 9-5 wagon).
My question is, after all this time, has any wisdom accumulated as to what causes this failure? Is it related to accumulated mileage (mine was 40K at the time), speed, temperature (it was very hot out), use of cruise control (I was), or any identified factor? Or is it totally random? Are the replacement modules any less prone to failure? The SLC service rep said something about "programming them differently now", but I'm not sure what that means. My own service rep here in Seattle said ahe and all his friends carry a spare when they go on trips. So I'm wondering if it could happen again in another 40K miles or so, or maybe tomorrow. I was lucky last time, but on a crowded freeway, it wouldn't be a pretty sight.
I apologize if this is a question that comes up a lot, but my car has been so trouble-free (until this) that I haven't visited this board in some time. Thanks for your help!
