the offical explanation is the failure of the power transistor that is part of the module -- there are four of these transistors in each module (4 cyl) and at least two suppliers of the transistor -- apparently there is a long term failure mode in certain batches of the the transistors from one supplier -- so if you get all four transistors from the same supplier the failure probability is much higher, where you get four transistors from the "reliable" supplier odds are you will never experience a failure...
based on the experiences of 2000-2002 vs. 2002-2003 owners on the board there was some design changes made in the module starting late in 2002 (and later) that improved reliability -- this may or may not be coincidental with some software changes which improved the diagnostics for misfires.
the recall for the problem will apparently start when a new/improved? module is available -- could take as long as march '06, in the meantime, if you have a failure outside of the warranty you will probably have to be persistent to get a gratis replacement...
i carry a spare which i removed after getting a CEL with misfire codes, just in case...
