Stereo startup max to 24 -- does it really do anything?

I really like a lower setting for the stereo max so I don't blast myself when I get back in the car after listening to music with the stereo volume really loud. However, I'm interested in the supposedly better sound when you turn the startup max up to 24, as discussed here a few days ago. So I tried it, but I don't notice much, if any, difference.
Of course, in the end, it's a matter of whether *I* notice enough of a sound difference to justify losing that nice feature. However, I want to see how much difference others have noticed.
