You'll get alot of varying opinions on this board-but I'd personally go for the 4 cylinder over the V6.
Main appeal for the 4cylinder is chain driven versus belt driven camshafts in the V6 (means less maintenance) and the performance upgrade paths of the 4 cylinders are better established (Abbott, Hirsch, Nordic, etc). And the 4 cylinder engine is one of the last ties to SAAB's historical past before GM's buyout (having been around in its basic form for over 25 years or so since the venerable 99). The V6 is a revamped Opel engine and was not really developed by SAAB. That doesn't mean the engine is not good, mind you. It's just not (yet) part of the company's tradition.
But both engines are good and it's really a preference thing. SAAB reluctantly introduced the 6 cylinder to the US mainly because of the perception that 4 cylinders-no matter how powerful or economical they are-just don't appeal to the target audience (first time SAAB buyers) forking over $30-40k for a car.
Most owners who previously owned SAABs undoubtedly pick the 4 cylinder. The 1st time buyers really don't know (or care) of the company's history and probably pick the V6 because it has "more cylinders." More *is* better, isn't it? ;-)
I've driven the V6 on several occasions and I just didn't like the engine "sound and feel" versus the 4 cylinder. Maybe I'm just a little biased. I've had a C900T and currently have a NG900SET.
I have a new '01 9-5 base wagon that I just bought 3 weeks ago and I love it!
Hope this helps,
