I have owned a 2.3 HOT 4 cylinder in the 1999 9-3 Viggen, and now own a 2000 9-5 SE with the V-6 that I bought from Brian at Saabcenter. If you're buying new, I definately would go with the 4, but used, the price difference is so little, that it will test drives to decide which is best for you.

Now, granted the Viggen had 225 horsepower vs. the v-6's 200 (plus more torque, too). I think the difference was in mid to upper range performance.

To me, the V-6 is wonderful off the line (especially with the auto in "sport" mode) all the way up TO third gear - at which point it seems to "loose it's breath" more so than the 2.3 4 which is a higher revving engine.

I'm not sure how the V-6 would compare to the base LPT in the 9-5, but there is a $750 performance upgrade on http://www.saabcatalog.com which I'm sure you could get discounted that would up the horsepower in the 4 to match the V-6.

The gas mileage in the V-6 isn't as good as I would like. I personnally average around 23 - 24 in mixed driving, whereas in my Viggen it was more like 27-29 in mixed, with outstanding highway mileage of around 30-31. I would imagine the LPT 4 would be similar to the Viggen's engine in that regards.

Persannly, I like the V-6 - I think it's extremely smooth, but I think you will just have to drive both and decide.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As far as the timing belt replacement, SAAB does it for free at 60,000 miles, so you wouldn't have to change it until 120,000 miles (if you have the car that long) so I wouldn't think that would be a huge deterrent...

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
