I wouldn't necessarily say frequently. Until the V6 (in the NG900, 9k and 9-5), SAAB hasn't changed from using 4 cylinder engines since the 99.
True, SAAB has obtained its engines from outside sources since its inception. SAAB had done so out of costs, convenience and time of development (a small volume maker doesn't particularly have vast resources to develop its own engines). However, SAAB has had over 25 years of refining the current 4 cylinder engines and it bears little resemblence to the Triumph engine it was derived from over 2 decades ago.
But the 3.0L V6 engine in the 9-5 is essentially the same engine as that found in the Catera (sans turbo).
What does this mean? I dunno. But SAAB's long history of just having 4 cylinder engines is as much tradition as having the ignition between the front seats. The V6 may hold that status in the future, but that remains to be seen. If the V6 was so great, why isn't it in top of the line model Aero?
The base LPT and Aero models have had power boosts 15hp (185hp from 170hp) and 20 hp (250hp from 230hp) respectively since their intros. The V6 hasn't changed since '98. If the V6 was so great, SAAB would've dropped the 4 cylinder engine lineup altogether when they introduced the 9-5. Or at least, the Aero would be sporting a V6.
But it isn't.
