I'm surprised that no one mentioned that most twin turbo installations are found on engines with a V configuration. By driving one turbo off each bank of cylinders the engine is symmetrical. The Saab V-6 utilizes only one turbo but has excellent low and mid range throttle response. Initial response is far crisper than the Aero, (but once the Aero's larger turbo spools up, it's smaller engine produces more power and torque.) This is due to a)larger capacity, b)a small turbo that spools up fast. The downside is that the small turbo dosen't provide much boost at higher engine speeds and the V-6 is maxed out at about 5,000 RPM. Saab had a lot of trouble developing the single turbo on the V-6, uneven thermal loading and power production were problems. Since the back pressure on the bank with the turbo is higher than the non turbo bank, the non turbo bank produces 60% of the power even though boost is even on both. The only inline twin turbo engine I can think of in current mass production is the 6 cylinder in the Volvo S80. I drove one and thought it had more turbo lag than any current Saab.
I love Saabs but have to admit that a well set up inline six like the new BMW 3.0 liter is one sweet engine.
