I agree that in comparison to a 9K, the miscellaneous storage in the 9-5 is not great. The map pockets on the front of the seats are a nice effort at a substitue, and the glove box is OK (although it doesn't compare with the huge '92 9K box with its neat storage bin that was in the door of the 9K glove box - boy was that nice for fuses, drain plug washers, receipts, registration, and misc junk) but the door side pockets of the 9-5 seem to be deliberately inadequate, and they are completely missing in the rear. I used to carry a pair of gloves and a pullover hat in the rear doors just in case of an emergency, but that option is gone with the 9-5.

What I miss most of all are places to dump stuff like loose change, pencils, pens, small note pad, paper clips, the odd screw or washer, tire guage, tooth picks, nail clippers, nail file, pocket knife, chap stick, cleanex, my wife's emery boards, and all of the assorted stuff that the 9K has tons of room for within reach of the driver. The pre-passenger-side air-bagged 9K was a real spoiler when it came to personal storage. The 9-5, with its huge, double sized audio, has done away with those nice bins in the console, and the center console mounted key has done away with the 9K's great coin bin.

The early 9K's were just great, and the lack of storage in the 9-5 for all of that stuff that I had grown accustomed to having available to me for the 15 years I drove them really dissed me, and made me feel cheated by the 9-5. That, and the loss of the hatch to the much smaller wagon almost made me feel betrayed. So, when it came time to replace the 9K, instead of buying a 9-5 I went out and bought an Audi. Guess what? The storage isn't great there either.

I'm afraid that the problem is not with the 9-5, but with the modern car. The pre-dual air bag 9K was an exception - it's personal storage was beyond excellent, and you have been spoiled by it. Don't expect to find that type of thoughtfull layout in a new car.
