You are quite right -- with the key in the middle it robs us of the only potential space for an expanded console compartment, or at least a flat space to place something (not to mention that passengers are constantly banging into it). Ever try and keep a soda in that center console cup holder (I have an '01)? You have to drive with the compartment open! So, although the armrest is inadequate, it's better than nothing -- but nothing is what you have if you are to drive with the compartment open. And that hokey in-dash cup holder -- while 'cool' to everyone who plays with it -- it's actually almost useless for most of today's larger sized drinks. The ones that do fit I have to struggle to get in and out. Talk about 'don't drink and drive' -- Saab seems to be taking it a little too literally!
Don't get me wrong, I love the car, and I use all the various compartments with no real complaints - although I've found myself leaving the glove compartment totally empty -- somehow thinking I'll use it as a refrigerator someday (which has yet to happen!) But please -- give me an armrest that my arm actually reaches, and that doesn't slide if you hit it a bit -- and stick the key somewhere else -- or if they're so worried about my knees -- then eliminate it altogether!
