I do agree with the explaination of the 9-5 as "European" as the explaination/excuse for the current cup/console design. I can tell you that having driven in Europe (Spain /Italy) a few times, it was near impossible to get a cup of coffee "to go" from any of the local establishments...it's simply not done there with any regularity. In fact you'll find that many of the shops don't even stock paper cups.
Having said that, there is no reason SAAB couldn't revisit the current design to better accommodate the American market... Afterall , they certainly spent more than a few minutes on a "V6" engine design, which was certainly targetted for the U.S. market. Take a look at a Volkswagen center console, they obviously designed their console with our market in mind, and it certainly hasn't hurt their sales.
In my mind, it's the window switches, as much as the ignition, that is eating up that center console space. Though personally, I do like having it in the center, but it would be nice to be able to accommodate a larger bottle without having to keep the center lid open ...
