Media makes it a news when it makes money for them..... Period.
A few weeks back, A Toyota car in Japan started fire from power window console, and a driver burned her arm but managed to pull it over and get out of the car for help. Did not make a big news... why? Media wants to keep Toyota business (ad., commercial, etc.) So not hearing on the news does not mean it is not happening in the real world.
Well, a gas heater in the cabin will make it relatively more unsafe... simply because it is one more potential to fail and cause problems. It could be safe enough, but never safer than one without. It's quite simple if you understand potential failure mode element analysis. But if it makes driving more comfortable, it could be a good trade-off.
