Bill: Bulbs are integral in the switches, so they will have to be replaced. Not uncommon, had this on both my 9000 and my 9-5. I also like to get as much fuel efficiency as is practical, but feel that for a car of the 9-5's size and aerodynamic characteristics, the mid thirties is pretty darn good, and I'm not going to go doing things that make driving either unsafe or paranoia inspired just to get a half a mile per gallon more. It's a bit like trying to decideon which car to buy if one goes to sixty in 7.0 seconds and another in 6.8. Big deal! there are bound to be lots of other considerations to look at besides acceleration that will differentiate the cars. Same with mileage. It's no surprise that your Volvo S-40 should get close to 40 on the highway, but what's the difference if it is 40 or 39.3? Is this really a difference worth even knowing about? I have actually seen a bit over 36 on the highway on several long trips in my 9-5,but it is not a figure you can take to the bank. Chances are on that day the winds were favorable( and this can make a big difference), the temperature was just right, and I was not using winter blend fuel. All of these are parameters that I cannot control. Just lucky a few times. This does not mean that a 9-5 gets over 36 on the highway, only that on a few select occasions,it did.
My point is that you get what you get.Finagling all sorts of parameters like tires, driving style etc.might get you a minor change in consumption, but look at what you give up to get it.
