Lou, I see what you are saying, but I have always felt that in the urban war out there on the highways, you need every advantage you can get. I am not just talking about accelerating harder from a stop, or climbing hills with less wheel spin, but just the day to day driving challenges we all face - slippery turns, unexpected maneuvers, emergency lane changes, passing on two lane roads - siuations where that additional traction means the difference between routine and drama.
My feeling, having owned (relatively) high performance AWD cars since 1988, is that they truly are safer and more confidence inspiring in all marginal situations. Sure, you can over-drive any situation and get into trouble, especially if you insist on using summer tires year round. But my feeling is that AWD and appropriate rubber reduces the chance of getting into trouble in the first place, and that is as important to me as ABS, crumple zones or whiplash protection.
It really comes down to personal preference, but I humbly suggest that anyone who has never driven a quattro in heavy rain or snow simply does not know what he is missing in his FWD car.
I sure wish my Aero had it, but I am delighted with it anyway, and have no regrets.
