...what about the rotation question? 4 new tires, after first rotation, where are the thinner treads? Rear. And this is ok?
There must be a cutoff point where too much difference between front and rear tire depth is a problem. Tire pressure and relative traction abilities of the two sets of tires must also play in. My question is where is this cutoff? 50% vs. 100% seems to be accepted as too much. What about 70/100, 80/100, etc?
The tirerack article's mention of wider, underinflated tires being a bigger hydroplane risk brings up another point. We might reduce rear tire pressure to get a better contact patch in dry conditions (recall we also want the rear sticking down then), but more contact patch = more slippery in wet/icy conditions.
