I had the ECU replaced in early 2000, although I never had any problems with the original one. Saab just wanted to make sure there would not be any problems, so they replaced all ECUs for free. The car worked just fine for the 2.5 years I had it - got a new 9-5 in December. The problem was not in electronics actually, but in some part supporting the printed circuit board which could make the PCB corrode or something.
Electronics is nice as long as it works. Here in Europe, many car manufacturers have been having problems with electronics. Saab developes their engine control systems by themselves and for a small manufacturer, I think they're doing a great job. Most car makers just buy their stuff from Bosch (well, Saab uses Bosch stuff for the ESP).
